Having our cherished memories saved only as digital files is dangerous: the files can become corrupted or lost forever. That’s why so many people turn to photo books. They serve as a permanent physical reminder of happy memories, as well as being a fantastic gift to pass on. Printique is one of the mainstays of the photo book industry, having been on the market since 1996. Many will remember the company as AdoramaPix before its rebranding. Printique is certainly one of the most interesting photo book services to choose from. You’re able to create the photo book of your dreams thanks to a huge variety of customization tools, allowing you to turn blank pages or exciting themes into real masterpieces. Your books can be created from scratch or from a PDF file using premium photo paper, various covers, different sizes and shapes, then delivered quickly to your doorstep or one of Printique’s locations.

Getting started with the Printique editor can be a little daunting at first, due to the sheer number of options available. You can choose from cover types, as well as the shapes, sizes, and types of paper. As you swap and change to your liking, you’ll notice the estimated price of your final product will adjust with it. This can all be done either on your computer or by using the aPixPublisher app for iOS users.
Printique gives you the option to convert PDF books into a photo book, which is ideal if you don’t fancy choosing existing design elements or starting from scratch. Picture uploading is also very simple, allowing you to upload from your computer or a choice of cloud services. Printique provides unlimited photo storage so you don’t have to worry about excluding any photos.
It’s easy to add pictures to your photo book. Printique gives you the option to use the autofill or, if you prefer doing everything by yourself, you can place the pictures manually into the book. From there you’re able to make minor modifications like size, angle, and opacity. You can also crop your pictures manually, but keep in mind that if you use a preset theme with preset photo holders, then your landscape or square pictures will be cropped anyway. To avoid this, you have to delete the preset photo holders and recreate their settings manually after you place your own, unaltered pictures into the book. The same rules apply to the text holders: they are not highlighted when you move your cursor over them, so moving them is tricky.
Thankfully, the above minor annoyances are overshadowed by the many extra features. You can choose from thousands of backdrops, select from countless photo frames to break the monotony of the dull rectangular ones, put a smile on your readers’ faces with various stickers, and even add QR codes to your books. You can also modify the default layouts and covers in addition to the number of pages and themes in case you change your mind, and if you let Printique put its logo on the selectable flyleaves, you’ll get them for free. Once you’ve finished and saved your book, you can download it in PDF, view it in the spectacular preview mode, and share your masterpiece with others to be viewed or purchased.
We already mentioned that it is virtually impossible to customize your photo book in a short period of time with Printique due to the many customization options offered by the software. And the same is true for the available themes and styles, so don’t be surprised if you end up spending hours just selecting the theme of your book.
There are 84 themes in total spread between 15 categories including general, family, travel, love, children, wedding, holiday, seasons, and so on. Nothing that you do with the themes is permanent, so you can always change your mind while you work on your project. The only confusing thing is that many of these themes can be found under multiple categories. You’re therefore encouraged to think outside the usual preconceptions, and you may end up choosing a theme from a different category that you can customize into the perfect look and feel for your book.
As with the themes, there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to photo book types. But no matter what type of book you prefer, the first thing you have to choose is the cover. You can choose a hard cover, leather cover (leather lux and genuine leather), or fabric cover (regular or die-cut). After that, you can pick one of the six available paper types your photos will be printed on. Always be sure to decide on the paper in advance because not all paper types are available for all book sizes. Speaking of sizes, there are 14 to choose from, ranging from 6×4.5 to 12×15 (in square, landscape and portrait shapes) but if you choose a leather cover, the number of available sizes reduces to eight.
Remember to always first choose the paper – six types are offered – and the number of pages because these features determine the final price tag. If you select the most cost-friendly paper type (luster finish) and pick for instance the 8×8 size, the base price of a ten-page long photo book with a hard cover is $38.99, which increases by $2.20 for each additional two pages. The maximum amount you’d have to pay for the biggest, 100-page long book in this size is $137.99. Leather cover 8×8 books start from $79.99 or $127.99 (depending on the type of leather), while fabric cover books in this size have a base price of $48.99 or $58.99.
Books are processed within 2-4 days, after which they are either dropped off at Printique’s store or shipped for a base price of $7.58 per product.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many permanent ways to reduce the price tags. You can get a $10 coupon for yourself and a $5 voucher for your friend with the Invite Friend promotion.
Support and Shipping
The most common questions related to Printique are answered in the large FAQ section. There was once an active online community which was also a great source of help, but that didn’t survive the rebranding. There are also tutorial videos to help get you started, and a live chat you can access as you’re setting up your photo book, although it isn’t available 24/7. Printique is present on all major social media networks, but keep in mind that these are mostly used to promote discounts and coupons. To get in touch with the company, you can either call them during business hours or send them an email.
In case of an unforeseen defect, Printique offers you a full refund. The company automatically sends you a corrected version of your product, and its full price will be issued as a credit if you send the faulty product back to the company.
As for shipping, you can choose from four delivery types plus the option to pick up your orders for free at Printique's store located in New York. All other orders are shipped to your address within the U.S. and Canada, the latter costing $49.99 plus $20 for each additional item. Other countries are sadly not served by the company.
Printique offers an enjoyable online photo book editor that offers plenty of great features and a multitude of finishing options for your printed book. There are a couple of hiccups in the online editor that we couldn’t help but notice, such as the auto-cropping of photos if you use the preset picture holders, and the somewhat clumsy way of moving text boxes. Customer service is of a basic level and worldwide shipping is not offered. However, customizing your books is very enjoyable, the number of themes and their combinability is extremely high, and if you are an iOS user you can create photo books on your tablet or phone too. If you need further proof that Printique is worth trusting with your most precious photos, just take a look at the various photo book types.
